Bluewater is committed to being the most highly valued energy partner, through integrity, respect for people where we live and work, and respect for diversity, inclusivity, and the environment that sustains us. These values are Bluewater; ensuring benefits are shared, that projects are sustainable for the environment and for local communities, for the long term.
Bluewater Renewable Energy Storage Project
The Bluewater Renewable Energy Storage project is a pumped hydro storage project designed to respond to the growing need for reliable, sustainable, renewable electricity to support California’s ambitious emissions reduction plan. Bluewater maximizes the benefit of renewable energy generation by storing that energy for peak periods when it is needed most. It is the most promising large-scale long-duration energy storage option for Southern California and will add critically needed support to achieve California’s renewable energy commitments of 100% renewable power by 2045.
Pumped Hydro
Pumped storage hydroelectric facilities store energy in the form of water in an upper reservoir, pumped from a reservoir at a lower elevation. During periods of high electricity demand, power is generated by releasing the stored water through turbines in the same manner as a conventional hydropower station. During periods of low demand, the upper reservoir is recharged using low-cost electricity from the grid to pump the water back to the upper reservoir. Invented in the 1920’s, pumped storage technology remains the most efficient large-scale form of renewable energy storage, boasting round trip efficiency of up to 87 percent and a lifespan up to 100 years. Further, pumped storage facilities improve electricity supply reliability without the environmental impacts of coal, oil, gas, or nuclear fueled electricity generation.
